Guild Cultural Precinct Info Session:  August 30, 10AM

Gardiner Museum Lecture Hall, 111 Queen Park

    RSVP by reply email: Carolyn@municipalmind.com
Need affordable, collective studio space in east-Toronto to create professional works in ceramics, metal, textile, hot glass, large sculpture fabrication, wood or jewelry?

    If so, read on…

    REQUESTS FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST:
    THE GUILD CULTURAL PRECINCT

    http://www.toronto.ca/culture/the_guild.htm

The purpose of this Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI) is to assess the interest and needs of artists and not-for-profit arts organizations interested in affordable, shared, collective artist studio rental opportunities at The Guild Cultural Precinct, on the shores of Lake Ontario overlooking the Scarborough Bluffs.  Responses to this REOI will aid the City of Toronto Economic Development and Culture – Cultural Services in determining the nature and level of interest in space at The Guild Cultural Precinct when it is slated to open in November 2012, and help further shape the vision of the Guild and inform the design process.

The historic Guild of all Arts was envisioned as an artists’ retreat to stimulate and nurture artistic endeavours in a unique landscape setting. The original vision of the Guild Founders, Rosa and Spencer Clark, provided the inspiration for a modern revitalization plan adjusted to suit contemporary needs and business concerns.

A key element of the Guild Inn site is an environmentally sensitive hotel development led by Centennial College that will provide quality lodging, fine dining and convention amenities at the location of the original Bickford estate house.  In 2006 Goldsmith, Borgal & Company Ltd Architects in conjunction with Artscape, the MBTW Group and Novita, were retained by the City of Toronto to define a feasibility, design and development model for a new cultural precinct on the 81-acre site surrounding the new hotel.

The cultural precinct will contain a contemporary sculpture park and festival gardens set amidst native forest, architectural follies and formal gardens.

Existing and new facilities will house well-equipped collective studios for sculptors and artisans, allowing them to share ideas, methods, and techniques with each other and the public.  Interior and exterior exhibition space will be provided to display elements of the Guild collection as well as a wide variety of new work. Interpretation of the site’s history and geographic setting will be provided through displays at the Visitor Centre and historic Osterhaut cabin.  A café and craft shop will further enhance the visitation experience. In keeping with key development principles of cultural and environmental continuity and sustainability, existing structures will be adaptively reused incorporating low energy and environmentally sustainable design solutions.

The project is conceived to proceed in two primary phases. Phase One will include the Sculpture Park, Festival Gardens, Fabrication Studio and Visitor Facilities.  Phase Two proposes the inclusion of an Art Gallery and enhancements to the Greek Theatre. This REOI is in reference to Phase One.

This is not an application for space. Subsequent to the completion of the REOI process, rental opportunities are expected to open in September 2011 with expected occupancy by November 2012.

Submission Requirements For Expressions of Interest

The full Request for Expressions of Interest can be downloaded at http://www.toronto.ca/culture/the_guild.htm (scroll to the bottom of the page for the download). Questions about submissions should be directed to Carolyn Taylor via email at carolyn@municipalmind.com.

    Information Session

August 30, 10am Gardiner Museum, in the Lecture Hall, 111 Queen Park, Toronto - RSVP to this email
The sessions will consist of a 20 minute presentation on the Guild Cultural Precinct, and a question and answer period about the REOI process. Guided site tours can be arranged for a later date, for anyone who is interested.  Limited spaces are available and are intended for those planning to submit expressions of interest. Time and location for Information Sessions along with RSVP details are available at: http://www.toronto.ca/culture/the_guild.htm

Deadline for Submissions:  All submissions must be received by 12 Noon on September 3, 2010.

About this REOI:  This REOI is being administered on behalf of the City of Toronto Economic Development and Culture – Cultural Services, by Carolyn Taylor, carolyn@municipalmind.com, 416-570-1613

    A Golden Age
An Art Exhibition Curated by Moses Znaimer
In collaboration with Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts
    At the ZoomerShow 2010
(Projected attendance: Over 20,000 in 2 days)
    Oct 30 – Oct 31, 9am - 5pm
Direct Energy Centre, Exhibition Place 100 Princes Blvd., Toronto,
    Ontario, M6K 3C3 Canada.
The term Golden Age originated in Greek mythology. It refers to the
first in a sequence of Ages of Man. The Golden Age denotes the period
of primordial peace, harmony, stability, and prosperity during which,
it is said, humans lived among the gods, mingling freely with them,
and living to a very old age – all the while keeping their youthful
    appearance and vitality.
According to media innovator Moses Znaimer, today’s new “Zoomer”
generation is staying current, fit, healthy and engaged well past what
used to be thought as the traditional age of “retirement”. In Mr.
Znaimer’s own words “most Zoomers are active, contributing members of
society. Just staying alive is not our preference; living well till we
    die is”
How does the concept of A Golden Age fire your imagination as a visual
artist? Artists are encour- aged to explore this theme widely through
the artistic medium of their choice.
Artists selected for this exhibition will be paid Carfac fees, will be
eligible for a $2000 Best in Show Prize and a $1000 Peoples’ Choice
Prize, and their work will be featured in Zoomer Magazine. Out of town
artists will receive accommodation if they wish to be present at the
    ZoomerShow.

    The West Gallery

    Jakub Dolejs
    “How I Make Things”
    The East Gallery

This Thursday, August 26, from 6-9pm Angell Gallery will host an opening reception for two exciting new solo exhibitions by gallery artists Alex McLeod and Jakub Dolejs. Alex’s inaugural solo show, “Spectral,” will be on display in the West Gallery and Jakub’s sixth solo show, “How I Make things,” will be on display in the East gallery. Both exhibitions will continue until September 25.

Alex McLeod’s new media artwork is quickly gaining very positive recognition with his current summer shows in Sao Paolo, Brazil (Museum of Images & Sound), New York City, Denver, and at the Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art (MOCCA) in Toronto.

Jakub Dolejs had previously exhibited sculptural work at Angell Gallery in his last solo show at Angell Gallery in 2007 (La Nuit Américaine). His new body of work, How I Make Things, continues his inquiry into language and representation. Jakub abandons his use of the language of images in favour of the language of objects.

Both artists will be present for the opening reception on Thursday night.

INTERVIEW : HUMBERTO LEON AND CAROL LIM OF OPENING CEREMONY

As we mentioned, and you probably already know, Opening Ceremony at Ace Hotel New York (who just had a nice article in the New York Times yesterday) will be staging a French flea market with their friends, collaborators, and favorite designers in the lobby during Fashion’s Night Out, September 10th. We were able to have a quick chat with Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, currently hailing from Tokyo (and pictured above in Ace-exclusive berets), about the open air market to end all open air markets (except it’s in our lobby).

Hi, Carol and Humberto. We’re excited about OC’s French flea market at Ace New York. Ace and Opening Ceremony have some things in common, among them our love of collaboration. This seems like the perfect showcase for all the fun work you do with friends. What inspired you?

Because this year’s country collaboration at Opening Ceremony is USA v. France, we wanted to incorporate a French theme in our Fashion’s Night Out concept. What better way to feature our French collaborations and designers than at a flea market, styled after the famous Parisian market Les Puces de Saint-Ouen? At a traditional bazaar, you can find a miscellany of interesting and often one-of-a-kind items at great bargains. We want to offer the same to those attending our Fashion’s Night Out event.

What are some of the things you’re most excited to see?

Our flea market will feature some of the most creative individuals in the fashion industry, so we’re looking forward to see how they decorate their booths. Several designers will also be offering one-of-a-kind items for sale, whether runway pieces that are not in production or vintage pieces from their archives, so we’re very excited to see what will be offered.

Are you volunteering to man any booths?

You’ll find us working at one booth or another throughout the night — and you’ll definitely see us at Opening Ceremony’s own booth!

    Will you be wearing berets?

We may. Regardless, you can be sure we will take advantage of this year’s French theme. C’est la mode!

    Tusovchiks
    Indisciplined Meetings Dianne Pearce

The word tusovka … comes from the verb tusovat, which means … to shuffle or mix the cards. Subsequently, the term tusovaniye (shuffling) has come to signify a factor contributing to artistic relations, whiletusovka is an artistic and intellectual community or association. … Meetings are the vital component of tusovka, i.e. it exists as a series of meetings. … doing it does not require established qualities or virtues, or professional or social standing. … To be in tusovka, you just need to be there. … Tusovka is a syndrome whose origins lie in the collapse of a disciplinary culture and social hierarchies. In turn, the effectiveness of the participant [tusovchik] in such projects … is achieved through individual flexibility and acceptance of the other. Viktor Misiano, “An Analysis of ‘Tusovka’. Post-Soviet Art of the 1990s”, 2002.

In my work, I have come to embrace carnivalesque environments and encourage ‘indiscipline’, which I translate into unruly encounters between the public and the work: not only do the environments I create tend to look like parties or school rooms, but the pieces often invite the public to touch or otherwise interact with them. As an art professor and museum educator, didactic-like materials riddle my work, encouraging a DIY philosophy of unschooling. As such, my work is no brow and participatory—it is for all ages. These interests have come about from having lived in Mexico City for 13 years, and now raising a bi-cultural family. My work has undoubtedly been informed by Mexican popular culture, and it manifests the aesthetic influence that country has had on my art.   Culture Days, Saturday, September 25, 1:00 to 4:00 pmStamp and Colour in a Mexican School Room! For all ages.Use the materials provided in my two installations to make your own pieces. In Polyphonic Novel, use up to 516 rubber stamps of images from the Webster’s Dictionary to create your own visual stories. A variety of papers and coloured stamp pads invite maximum creativity, then pin them to the walls of the gallery and take a few home with you. In Indisciplined Meetings, sit in the workshop area and colour the same images, but now in colouring books and translated into Spanish. There is a selection of 10 colouring books to choose from, and crayons will be in abundance. Can’t colour all the images in your book in one afternoon? Take it home with you! The artist will be in attendance and refreshments will be served.

Looking for Studio Space? Guild Cultural Precinct Info Session this Monday!

Reminder: Call for Submissions for “A Golden Age” - DEADLINE SEPT. 10, 2010

Download now or preview on posterous
    Zoomer Exhibition.pdf (193 KB)

    CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:
Out of town
artists will receive accommodation if they wish to be present at the
    ZoomerShow.

What are some of the things you’re most excited to see?Our flea market will feature some of the most creative individuals in the fashion industry, so we’re looking forward to see how they decorate their booths.

Tusovchiks: Indisciplined Meetings - by Dianne Pearce @ The Red Head

The artist will be in attendance and refreshments will be served.

    iheartmyart:

Modern Painters magazine has extended its deadline for the inaugural RE:VISION DESIGN AWARDS 2010. Designers have until December 1 to submit their designs.

Modern Painters is a magazine that showcases creators—artists, designers, filmmakers, architects—who are experimenting with new ways of seeing the world.

We invite emerging designers of every stripe to revisit, rethink, and reimagine how we live in our homes and to conceive an object or environment that offers a new, more enlightened lifestyle. Whether in the fields of furniture, lighting, product, interior, or environmental design, Modern Painters welcomes submissions that thoughtfully explore new ways to live, work, play, and interact at home.
