Notorious: Portraits of History’s Most Infamous, an international art exhibit curated by Bradley Platz

Opening Reception: Saturday June 16, 2012, 6-10 pm
    Exhibition Dates: June 16 - July 8, 2012
    Gallery Hours: Wednesday - Sunday, 11a - 7pm

    no·to·ri·ous

Famous or well known, typically for some bad quality or deed.

Modern Eden Gallery is pleased to announce “Notorious”, a group exhibition featuring portraits of History’s most infamous figures.   Participating artists have chosen subjects from among the most notorious historical persons and each artist has created work for the show that speaks with their unique artistic style. Among the likes of Sid Vicious and William Burroughs stare the faces of Caligula and Marie Antoinette.  From the beguiling grace of Isadora Duncan to the delicious insanity of Hunter S. Thompson, no subject is sacred.  These are the portraits that speak for the historical tyrants, literary scoundrels, artistic rebels, infamous criminals, sexual deviants, famous fools and madmen.

What is “Notorious” is relative to time, historical documentation, legend and cultural interpretation.  A person considered notorious in their time might be viewed differently today, whereby modern standards change, the nature of what is morally “bad” changes.  This exhibition is partly a testament to the misunderstood, the cultural pioneers, and partly a condemnation of the truly and memorably evil.  It is an artistic survey of the shifting nature of what is considered ‘Notorious’ and a testament to the various ways of rising and falling to fame.

Exhibiting artists are Aaron Hodges, Akira Beard, Albert Ramos, Bradley Platz, Brian Pollett, Calvin Lai, Daniel J. Valadez, Damir Simic, Derek Harrison, Emilio Villalba, Leilani Bustamante, Michael Ryan, Paul Morin, Rachel Moseley, Robert Bowen, Sidharth Chaturvedi, Hugh Leeman, Jaxon Northon, John Wentz, Jules Kmetzko, Justin Loney, Lance Hewison, Laura Buss, and Lee Harvey Roswell.

The opening reception for “Notorious” will be held at Modern Eden on Saturday, June 16th from 6-10pm. The exhibition will be on display through July 8, 2012 and is free and open to the public. Complimentary drinks will be served and there will be a live DJ set by Edward Aten during the reception. Exhibiting artists and curator will be in attendance.

San Francisco opening this Thursday: Carte Blanche gallery & bookstore
Gallery Carte Blanche is an online gallery project I helped owner/curator Gwen Lafage design and build.
Gwen has connected with the most interesting photographers from Japan, Italy, Congo, China, Spain. She uses the best printers in the Bay Area to make high-quality prints that remain affordable. For anyone interested in photography, the gallery site should be an interesting browse, the photos look good, with interviews and background info for every photographer.
Beyond the online store, Gwen has recently opened a gallery in San Francisco. Carte Blanche is also a bookstore, already one of the best places to buy photo books in San Francisco. Gwen has sourced those interesting books you have seen online, but have never been able to flip through yourself.
I’ll at the opening, from 7pm-ish, it would be cool to meet some sf tumblr people there!
When: Thursday, December 15, 6-9pm Where: 973 Valencia St. (near 21st Street)
(above: Shinya Arimoto’s work is sold online and at the gallery)
