by Adam Medley

Thursday, July 22, 2010, 7-9pm at Art Metropole

Art Metropole is pleased to host the launch of Adam Medley’s inaugural The pleasure is back product line. The first multiples to ever be created for the irreverent and long-running consumer satire project, this collection of posters, t-shirts and zines coincides with a redesigned and revitalized The pleasure is back website.

The pleasure is back

Finding its beginnings eight years ago in the first of what would become a library of text/image collage combinations numbering over half a thousand, The pleasure is back is an ongoing effort to spread the radical emancipatory ideology of irrational exuberance through both contemporary and traditional channels of (North) American consumerism. While assuring itself thousands upon millions of converts through a new and improved thepleasureisback.com website, the simultaneous release of this generous assortment of value-priced novelties marks The Pleasure Is Back’s enterprising leap from the online sphere to the physical world, as well as its much-anticipated transition from desktop wallpaper to dorm room wall-saver (among other things). Effectively nullifying any doubts that may have yet lingered, this cyber-space/retail-space one-two punch cements The Pleasure Is Back’s trailblazing position as “official brand of the twenty-first century.”

Bentley has bound tires, hose, air filters, and punching bags with hide and horse hair to create a suite of enigmatic sculptures. Born in Burlington, Vermont and raised just over the Canadian border in New Brunswick, Bentley’s practice is influenced as much by his east-coast heritage as it is by his love for the inorganic and the morbid. His multi-disciplinary approach and bizarre use of materials seek to immortalize bodies and practices that have since passed: everything from dead animals and salvaged industrial objects, to the most obscure of Victorian traditions.

This is Bentley’s first solo exhibition at p|m Gallery. CALL | Call: Public Space ARTivism Initiative
————————————————————————————————————
Have you been involved in the production of a community
mosaic, labyrinth or street theatre performance? Do you know of
projects that use art to transform public space or related events?
The Sustainable Thinking and Expression on Public Space
(STEPS) Initiative, is a group of artists, activists, architects, and
academics, collectively promoting sustainable and community-
centred public spaces. We are committed to using art to
challenge and change the ways in which public spaces are
currently being used, especially in urban environments. STEPS
aims to facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration
between individuals and grassroots collectives using art to
engage citizens in transforming their local environments.
In service of our mission, STEPS is developing a series of tools
which includes an online meeting ground where citizens can
experience the work of their peers in other communities, and
engage in dialogue on the growing movement of ‘Public Space
ARTivism’ (the use of art to enliven the relationship between
people and their local places). STEPS is also developing tools
for those who are interested in starting initiatives in their own
communities, but who are unsure of where to begin, such as a
Public Space ARTivism Manualfesto and a documentary film.
We are conducting interviews with ARTivists, activists, and
community groups and individuals supporting this type of work
to collect information on the successes, challenges and lessons
learned in grassroots public space ARTivism across Canada. Our
findings will inform the creation of an international network of
public space ARTivists.
If you have been involved in ‘Public Space ARTivism’, have an
interest in partnering with STEPS on a project, or are interested
in interning with our organization, let us know.
More information: www.stepsinitiative.com (soon to be re-
launched)
Become a fan of STEPS on Facebook
Contact: Alexis Kane Speer, Founding Director - Info [at]
stepsinitiative [dot] com
http://www.stepsinitiative.com

————————————————————————————————————
02. EXHIBITION | The Bluffs Gallery | Janos Buda
————————————————————————————————————
A life in art will be revisited at Scarborough’s Bluffs Gallery this
month. Drawings, paintings and prints from the estate of
Hungarian-born artist Janos Buda will be shown in the
Scarborough Arts Council’’s gallery from July 17 – 27.

Buda’s life was consumed with art-making, and his early years as
an artist included numerous exhibitions in European galleries.
From his arrival in Toronto in 1955, Buda was involved in this
city’s art community, and was a well-recognized visitor to
concerts and exhibitions. He was an active member of many
groups, including Scarborough Arts Council, where he remained
a faithful volunteer until shortly before his death. After Buda’s body was discovered in his Toronto Community
Housing apartment in 2005, friends and colleagues rallied to
save his life’s work. Thousands of drawings and paintings were
pulled from the apartment, as well as many photographs and
albums created by the artist to document his career. Many of his
Toronto drawings and personal documents were donated to the
City of Toronto Archives by Scarborough Arts Council, after they
had retrieved the work from the Office of the Public Guardian
and Trustee.

The exhibition at The Bluffs Gallery this month will be the first
show from the artist’s estate since his death. It is a fundraising
sale for the Janos Buda Memorial Association, a volunteer
group who are preserving the artist’s memory through his work.
The Association’s current project is to raise a headstone for
Buda’s unmarked grave in Scarborough’s St. Margaret’s in the
Pines cemetery. Sales from the exhibition will also support the
community arts programs of Scarborough Arts Council. As they investigate they are pulled
deeper into the world of eco-terrorism and we delve deeper
into the psychology of the young man behind the bombing, a
young foreign man named Alan. Working on the “Island of
Dreams,” a man-made island in Tokyo Bay where all the refuse
of the city is piled, has left Alan with an overwhelming hatred
for modern life and the pollution it spews into the air. He feels
no other choice but to take action, that is if Terayama and
Nomura can’t stop him first. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”

Oscar Wilde

Narrative / Identity – Open Call for group exhibition

As a means of grappling with the flux of identity, narratives are a necessary part of individual and social constructs. Whether internal or external, narratives define how we see ourselves and others.

Which facts construct our identities?

Do we have a variety of identities and what makes us change them?

Is the identity we display in public different than our private one?

What happens if we take an identity of another person?

Does an ID or passport tell the most important things about us? If you don’t have one does it mean you are invisible?

Does education and knowledge about society and politics change our identity?

For the first group show of 2011, February 3 – March 12, curated by Nicole Bebout and Sonja Hofstetter, The AC Institute seeks to investigate the ways in which narrative is used by contemporary artists to construct or demolish our ideas of self and other. Whether through guerrilla-like disruption, ambiguity or fantasy inspired story-telling, we are seeking artists who see narrative as essential to their artistic identity.

Focusing on experimental, installation, and new media work, AC seeks submissions from contemporary artists, and others, working in any medium. Artists are encouraged to submit work either already existing or as-yet unrealized that addresses the interlocking questions of narrative and identity; either at the level of social practice, contemporary representation, or both.

Email submissions should be sent to submissions@artcurrents.org by Sept. 15th, 2010.
About AC Institute:

The AC Institute exists to advance art through investigation, research and practice. It is a lab for experimentation and a forum for critical discussion. Emphasizing emerging, international, and under-represented artists, the Institute develops projects across disciplines, exhibiting work deploying a variety of strategies for critical, experiential, and performative interventions in the field of contemporary art. In addition to publishing critical writing that pushes conventional expectations of meaning and objectivity, the AC Institute realizes off-site projects taking place at the edge of the art marketplace. Committed to an integrated vision of creative practice, Art Currents creates autonomous spaces to pursue experimental work. The AC institute is non-profit 501(c)3 under the Direction of Holly Crawford.

Since moving to Chelsea in September of 2008, AC has mounted numerous exhibitions and performances, participated in the 2009 Armory show with Critical Conversations in a Limo; collaborated with over 50 artists; and worked with various cultural organizations including Rhizome and Harvestworks to pursue its mission. We provide space, programming support, and certain A/V equipment.
 The West Gallery

 July 22nd – August 21st, 2010
Opening reception Thursday July 22nd, 6–9 PM

For Immediate Release

ANGELL GALLERY is pleased to present its annual Summer Group Show featuring the photographic work of artists Bonnie Baxter, Jessica Eaton, Derek Evans, and Alex Kisilevich. The exhibition will be on display in the West Gallery from Thursday, July 22 to Saturday, August 21, 2010. An opening night reception will be held on Thursday, July 22 from 6 – 9pm.

Summer group shows are the perfect time to try things out and test ideas, to draw links between variables we suspect will mesh perfectly. When the results are positive, the new combinations we find can provide momentum and food for thought for both the public, and artists alike. Summer is best most of all for giving us the chance to expose ourselves to possibilities – both experientially and imaginatively – that are just out of reach most of the time.

From the suggestively haunting, semi-autobiographical fictions of Bonnie Baxter to the rich, quasi-abstract work of Derek Evans; and from the uninhabited science-fiction dreamscapes of Jessica Eaton to the ironic society pop of Alex Kisilevich, this summer’s show features a selection of photo-based artists whose highly developed styles merge in a sequence that is at once heterogeneous, and a textbook example of a classic summer group exhibition. These are artists who, although in widely different ways, all exploit traditional notions of beauty: their work complements each others’ because each is able to give us a powerful aesthetic experience, while making us doubt that beauty is all it’s cracked up to be, much less all there is to take pleasure in.

At the heart of their practices is a conceptual kernel that combines the camera’s registration of reality with a tell-tale re-imagining of what that “reality” may be, or may involve. As such, they fit together like a four-part harmony that retains the individuality of its parts, but comes together with a flourish.

For Immediate Release

ANGELL GALLERY is pleased to present the upcoming show in the East Gallery, Memorandum by Allison Freeman. This will be Allison’s first showing at with Angell Gallery and will run from July 22 to August 21. An opening night reception will be held on Thursday, July 22 from 6 – 9pm.

In the traditional view, paintings were conceptually likened to windows. The artist was said to record what was hypothetically real, and didactically could be taken to be literal. In Allison Freeman’s new body of work, done while finishing her graduate degree at Yale University, a next-generation twist has been added to that idea: in her series of elevators located in the hallways or garages of office buildings, we are slyly denied the ability to infer what is or is not, or could be going on. The images she works with are in fact of an actual place, but have been painted in a richly post-impressionist manner in such a way as to make identification unlikely.

And in her “Document” series, in which she makes an oil painting by transcribing a bureaucratic form or a bill of sale, she adds a conceptual window to the idea of the surface of her paintings: we see the document once removed in the first-hand fact of the painting. This distancing tactic, in which the whole of her painters’ toolbox is engaged, brings clearly to mind the experiential gap between seeing and knowing; between presence and action, absence and mere awareness.

Beyond the elevators’ transitional movement, action and non-action are seemingly deemed to be in essence indistinguishable. In such a way as to bring our attention to the self-referential fact of this “reality”, our gaze is directed not to a scene or any activity, but the possibility of a place which could be anywhere; or non-existent, effectively an abstraction, much like the document pieces in their use of the shallow space and gridded structure of much geometric abstraction.

And while this interpretation may be strengthened by the artists’ rhetorical demonstration of technical prowess, we should also note the self-conscious nod in the direction of critical theory, in the subtle menace of the putative business offices or private bedrooms these elevators may bring us to; or in what seems like the innocuous content of the documents. The insight this ironic, tongue-in-cheek literalism programs into the work is that in rendering what she calls “a transitional space of entrances and exits, but never a destination”, alongside the paintings they inhabit, Freeman’s elevators and documents become ciphers standing for an interpretation of art; for the uncertainty of subjectivity, and the strange, hidden beauty of our quotidian lives.

A recent MFA graduate at Yale University, Allison’s work has been exhibited in Toronto, Montreal, and at a recent MFA exhibition in New Haven, CT. Her work has been reviewed in the Concordia Journal, the Yale Daily News, and in the Globe and Mail by esteemed art critic Gary Michael Dault.

Click for additional information on Memorandum

“Architectural Digestions”
The Project Room

 July 22nd – August 21st
Opening reception Thursday July 22nd, 6–9 PM

For Immediate Release

ANGELL GALLERY is pleased to present the upcoming show in the Project Room, Architectural Digestions, by Gertrude Kearns. This will be Gertrude’s first time showing at Angell Gallery and will run from July 22 to August 21. An opening night reception will be held on Thursday, July 22 from 6 – 9pm.

Gertrude Kearns’ work is centered in a belief in the positive interaction between painting and architecture. For her this is representative of an idealist striving toward a better social future, one in which art can and would play an important role; when it would be self-evident that art - and the image of art - is central to life because of its unique power to remind us of our humanity, as both creators and creations. We are admonished to stay grounded but too, to maintain our sense of humour, with a light touch and in a graceful painterly tone of voice. These paintings remind us of things, first visually, and then subjectively, spiritually; they seek to edify without moralizing, and do so with both zest and self-awareness. All the formal elements of two-dimensional art, especially color and line, show themselves to be helpful agents for Kearns, in pursuing the logic of her aesthetics.

Space unfolds in these mixed-media works along swooping architectonic lines, defying gravitational and positional logic within the purview of their vast mindscapes. Seeming to be located both “inside” and “outside”, to be both lyrical and geometric, and most importantly to be somehow keyed both in major and minor chords, the work swings between these poles effortlessly, engaging us because it is itself so engaged. And if it tacitly acknowledges, most especially in its sheer visual attractions, the distance between the functional role it plays in the world, and what by its nature it wishes to do, it is all the more at home, being and creating at once the thing it is and the thing it suggests.

Gertrude’s work has been exhibited in Toronto, Ottawa, and Washington. Her work is included in such notable collections as: the Portrait Gallery of Canada (Ottawa, ON), the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (Halifax, NS), Art Collection Canada (Toronto, ON), the Department of National Defense (Ottawa, ON), and the Canadian War Museum (Ottawa, ON). Gertrude’s work has received critical review in Canadian Art magazine, as well as in the National Post, the Globe and Mail, and the Toronto Star.

Click for additional information on Architectural Digestions

We extend the challenge to artists
to forget accepted “rules” and work in a fashion that includes an
understanding of flexibility in relation to the immediate environment.
This approach should bring about new and exciting projects that push
beyond the restraints of the traditional gallery milieu and the
confines of set artistic disciplines. Artists are welcome to submit work in any media, including but not
limited to: drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation,
participatory, performance, video, and new media. Artists should
note, however, that sound elements are discouraged due to the
limitations of the box.

This series encourages artists to push the boundaries of their comfort
zones and take the opportunity to experiment with new mediums or
styles.
Keeping with the theme of the “mash-up” artists applying
collaboratively with significantly different practices will be given
special consideration. Artists applying independently may be matched
by the curators with other applicants to produce a collaborative work. For more information about the series, visit the Intersections
website: www.intersectionsg1313.worpress.com

Deadline for submissions is Friday July 16, 2010.

Tearing through heavily stifled inner secrets, Kara deconstructs the adult self in a playful manner. Her works boldly confront the viewer with subject matter that displaces societal propriety, fleshing out long lost fears and dark secrets. Come and share in this psychological cleansing and participate in this ritual of self exposure and release.”

I enjoy getting inside people’s heads, mine and those of people close to me. We all have a confused, wicked little child within us, but how often do we admit the true nature of this beast? Selfishly sexual, eternally curious and imaginative, these paintings show adults in their childhood guise. Secret ways that friends masturbated when they were children, distorted rumors and fears about what sex is, terror of the monsters and the dark, this is a fun and psychologically fraught exhibition.”

-Kara Williams, 2010

July 14 - August...

EXTREME PAINTING @ GALERIE D’ESTE

July 14 - August 15

Vernissage Wednesday July 14 from 5 pm to 8 pm

Galerie D’Este is proud to present the group show “Extreme Painting”, part of a series of exhibitions uniting sixteen Montreal galleries. The gallery will present works by Paul Bourgault, Ángel Mateo Charris, Costa Dvorezky, Drew Simpson and Jean-Pierre Ruel on the theme of the human figure. Each painter places the figure in context (or out of context) to elaborate on the body with his own vision.

Paul Bourgault uses vibrant colours and modeled flesh and draperies to create dynamic sacred spaces spilling over with abundance. The fragmented, Classicizing bodies swirl among food wrappings, labels, print cutouts and enlarged dot-matrix textures in dense compositions that are truly excessive.

In widescreen figuration, the work of Ángel Mateo Charris surprises with cinematic angles and simple but equivocal compositions. His costumed figures skulk anonymously at the centre of bizarre and irrational circumstances under a sky reminiscent of De Chirico, confronted inconclusively with symbols drawn from popular culture.

Costa Dvorezky’s « Jump » series explores the figure at the apex of a movement, floating against an abstract ground which drips down around them. Broad strokes define the play of light on muscles in a tribute to the Mannerist technique of distorting anatomy to enhance the sense of gesture. Through his amalgamation of genres, Dvorezky’s contemporary practice honors his heritage as a painter.

Drew Simpson’s arrangements of objects, resembling curiosity cabinets, reveal the interior spaces of homes in the hyper-naturalist tradition of classical Dutch still-life painting. The lush textures of wood paneling, velvet, flowers and fruit are set on edge by elements of strangeness referring to war and death, be it a human jawbone in a floral arrangements or a miniature Spitfire, guns blazing, arcing around an antique chair. This human element disturbs the space, troubling the viewer and offering an ironic comment on the relationship between the human being and his “interior”.

Jean-Pierre Ruel’s works provoke passion and reflection with his extraordinary brushwork and destabilizing content. The artist paints with an inspiration that is as much visceral as spiritual, his stroke at once instinctive and controlled. He presents silent, emotionally charged interactions between figures who seem to suddenly have fallen silent. The viewer is left to situate herself within these strange meetings, intrigued by the sensation of having just walked in on something.
