Artist Statement:
Leah’s form of art initially began when she was attending art class during her teenage years. The art instructor encouraged her to use a straw with paint and make something with it. It was at that moment she knew it was something she would love to explore and perhaps conquer. She used to do everything with her right hand. She was in a catastrophic car accident, which forced her to develop control and accuracy with her left hand. She would like to now think of herself as being somewhat ambidextrous. Prior to her accident she was able to travel the world. On her journeys she experienced different cultures, languages and food. It was an amazing part of her life. Always feeling inspired after her adventures. The pieces she connects with the most show a lot of beauty, evolution and truth. By connecting with them she can see the potential right away and she lets her passion create something clever. Using texture with a lot of contrast makes her pieces attractive and pleasing to the eye. A story emerges and a focal point arrives to capture your eye and allow it to travel throughout the canvas. Her work has an intriguing energy to it. Her favorite tools are probably her hands. Using many materials keeps things forever changing. She has used a lot of combinations of colour allowing the materials to take control when they are applied. She says: “I don’t try and force my will with a brush. We work together with the material.” Her love of art is her passion and will stay with her forever.
