05. PUBLICATION | Border Crossings | NEW ISSUE ON NEWSSTANDS NOW

Vol 29 No 2 Issue 114 Border Crossings’ NEW Issue called MARCEL x 3, features a
foldout cover designed for BC by Marcel Dzama In this issue you will find Marcel three times: Dzama
Duchamp
Barbeau In the current issue, Quebec artist and member of the
Automatistes Marcel Barbeau, a signatory of the Refus global,
talks with Border Crossings about his comprehensive career for
which “change has been a consistent requirement.” In an engaging interview with Border Crossings, Winnipeg’s own
Marcel Dzama discusses his artistic influences, his distinct style,
and the Royal Art Lodge. What do contemporary abstract painting, disco, and the death
switch have in common? Artist John Kissick creates an argument
for the unlikely relationship in an insightful essay. Vancouver-based curator Jesse McKee examines alternative
ways of curating with an article that “celebrates several
innovative exhibitions that outrightly investigate forms of
curatorial otherness.” This issue also features an article on the work of Les
Automatistes playwright and poet, Claude Gauvreau. Ray
Ellenwood explores Gauvreau’s theatrical influence in Quebec
but lack of presence elsewhere, asking the question, “who’s
afraid of Claude Gauvreau?” Art Pages feature the collaborative work of Toronto-based artists
Eldon Garnet and John Abrams who created a series of
photographs and paintings around Reunion, the historical chess
match between renowned artists Marcel Duchamp and John
Cage held at Ryerson in 1968. Also in this issue, a look at new work by Toronto based
composer and sound artist E C Woodley, reviews of the 2010
Whitney Biennial, Eliza Griffiths, Daniel Spoerri, Bonnie

07. CALL | Joel Yum | Which One(s)…
————————————————————————————————————
Everyone has a unique character, everyone has their own story. Which One(s)… is a portrait project to capture images of what
you are and what you aren’t, what you want to be and what you
don’t want to be. It is a project to display images of confidence
and insecurity, images of hope and despair. There is no limit to
the concept or idea. For those viewing, this project is meant to expose the different
insights people have based on their own experiences,
upbringing, culture etc, and how they contrast or compliment
those insights. For the person being photographed, it is a way to showcase or
vent an experience or feeling that they wouldn’t normally want
to share, or simply to have fun exploring their own character. The main idea of the project is to capture something unique in
the person being photographed and the opposition to it. No
one will know the concept of the images nor will they know
which of the images is true. The only information given will be
the title. It is to create thought from the viewer. Love or hate,
fact or fiction, representative or non-representative, discuss or
debate. http://joelyum.com/whichones.html ————————————————————————————————————
08. EXHIBITION | Redhead Gallery | Margie Kelk
————————————————————————————————————
DATES OF EXHIBITION: May 26 - June 19 Beyond Absurd
With Beyond Absurd, Margie Kelk has created a mixed media
installation that looks at past and present communication set in
the context of a world grappling with the disastrous effects of
climate change. Kelk’s exhibition incorporates drawings, light
box paintings, and ceramic and plastic sculptures. The artist
juxtaposes the historical with the contemporary. She presents
Aztec deities who look down upon a world engorged with vast
amounts of information technology, technological innovations,
and their obsolete by-products. Aztec deities and altars stand
on one side of the gallery; a contemporary ’glass’ house, empty
and foreboding, stands on the other. Both appear to be
deprived of human presence, but remnants of technological
communication devices endure. www.margiekelk.com Red Head Gallery

How green is the artwork you buy? Do today’s artists repurpose
and recycle their materials to minimize their artistic footprint?
Can we as artists turn this process of Creation into reCreation
and find ways to incorporate the old into the new? This year’s
RAW Members’ Theme Show challenges our artists to explore
beyond their familiar toolbox to experiment with a green theme
of recycling as inspiration - using recycled, restored,
reconstructed, and reclaimed materials in the content and
production of their pieces. [ opening reception ]

12. OPENING | Shopgirls Gallery Boutique | Jessica Rode | JUN 3
————————————————————————————————————
Elemental: Drawings by Jessica Rode
June 1-30 Shopgirls Gallery Boutique is pleased to present drawings by
Jessica Rode. Jessica Rode’s work explores the connections and
disconnections between humans and nature by comparing their
internal cellular structures, which repeatedly mirror one another;
visually through their shape and physically through their
function. Her work weaves together images of human bone
marrow, cells and arteries with tree vessels, pores and bark.
Using the structural patterning of the cells as a foundation,
Rode reorganizes the organisms. The joining of human and tree imagery solidifies their bond by
placing them in equal balance with one another. This melding
asks one to question his/her personal and human relationship
within and towards the natural environment. Join us June 3, 2010 for the opening from 7 to 10pm. Shopgirls Gallery Boutique

17. OPENING | Show & Tell Gallery | Vladimir Kato / Alëna Skarina | JUN 4
————————————————————————————————————
Show & Tell Gallery is proud to welcome Vladimir Kato to his
second solo show with the gallery in as many years. This exhibition is Vlad’s take on the exploitations of wildlife. By
using a range of unnatural and over exaggerated colors, Vlad
aims to capture the chaotic personalities in the subjects he
paints. Wilderness is a truly unique and amplified look at the
idea of zoology. Vladimir Kato is a graduate of the Interpretive Illustration and
Classical Animation Programs at the Sheridan College of Art
and Design. Since graduating he has done illustration for
several recognized magazines and clothing companies, worked
with award winning animation studios, and exhibited his fine art
across the world. Vladimir Kato

www.showandtellgallery.com Upcoming: Alëna Skarina - Kind Red
Show & Tell Gallery is pleased to welcome Siberian born artist
Alëna Skarina to her first solo exhibition with the gallery.
Alëna’s art reflects her deep affinity with animals and their
poignant nature. Line refinement, organic hand done
typography, and tasty (sometimes perverse) subject matter are
some of Alëna’s most common pursuits when it comes to
illustration. Alëna’s fine art illustrations have been recognized by American
Illustration, 3X3 Magazine, Applied Arts, and Creative
Quarterly. Her commercial clients include Milk, Nissan, and
Chatelaine Magazine. Kind Red is a body of work about kindred connections
manifested by kindness. The animals and creatures in this body
of work interact in symbiotic ways, denoting the beauty of
reciprocation. The typographic elements that appear
throughout the Kind Red series also reinforce Alëna’s personal
stance: that kindness is the most powerful taming agent, akin to
the power of blood ties. Alëna Skarina

Using Paul Klee as inspiration, the vision is simple. The idea is
simple. We are “taking a line for a walk.” The line may run off

precise or free to go where it will.
Above all, we will allow the line a will, be it ours, or its own. “Take a line for a walk …”

Also in this issue, a look at new work by Toronto based
composer and sound artist E C Woodley, reviews of the 2010

and insecurity, images of hope and despair.

Members’ Show | JUN 3

Jessica Rode’s work explores the connections and
disconnections between humans and nature by comparing their
internal cellular structures, which repeatedly mirror one another;
visually through their shape and physically through their
