Two artists Matak and Owens use the glance and the gaze to create a playful commentary on the subtleness, superficiality and slipperiness of the glance along with its inherent naughtiness as opposed to the history of the gaze and its inherent earnestness in art history of intentionality, seriousness and studiousness.

The idea of looking ,of taking apart the action of the look and to turn it inside out in the gallery space is to critique how we frame our looking, how it is framed for us and how we reframe the telling of what we see. Are we ever able to really free ourselves from the illusion of an optical recording?

ADAM MATAK

Matak continues his exploration into the sociology of the museum space and the way we “view” art. His use of art history, pastiche and pop art have drawn the attention
of art critic James Elkins who will be discussing Matak’s piece The Critic in his upcoming lecture tour. Matak’s new sculptural works are life size Museum patrons which not only intrigue the viewer by their scope and size but question the viewer’s placement and engagement of viewing art as they themselves are viewing art in the traditional gallery setting. Gary Michael Dault wrote of Matak in 2008: “Adam Matak is a gifted young artist whose exhibition, Secondary Sources, …. wittily addresses what Matak sees as the “social space of the gallery.”

Imagine hip hop and graffiti art brushing up with the likes of art theorist such as Douglas Crimp and you get a pretty keen sense of the wonderful, slightly surreal and fragmented world Matak wants to you to be immersed in.

Beverly Owens

Owens’ love of art cinema (one of her favorite directors is Michelangelo Antonioni) helps to explain the process which has led to her unique style. Critics use terms  such as ‘coolly elegant,” “open ended” “haunting yet familiar.” Owens recreates haunting, humorous all-too-poignant memories from the past and streamlined images of a present you might miss through your day. Beautiful but not pretty.
Owens recently won curator’s choice at The Elaine Fleck Gallery and an award at The Artist Project Toronto. An extensive review in Arabella magazine: Canadian Art, Architecture and Design will be coming out late Spring as well as an interview in The Globe and Mail Magazine Lush. Blogto editor Derek Flack asserts “Encaustic painting is experiencing a resurgence, and the Beverly Owens Project is one of the best places in the city to see it.”
