On February 9th, Superb High Vernacular will showcase two Brooklyn based artists in a pop up exhibition at a vacant commercial space. This exhibition, titled ‘Alternate Affect’, will showcase two emerging interdisciplinary artists, Myles Bennett and Timothy Gasbarro. Featuring drawings, paintings, garments, jewelry and sculpture this exhibit will highlight the versatility of artistic vision as it translates through different visual media. The show will remain on view until February 29th. Many artists commit themselves to one specific medium. In this exhibition, the viewer gets an opportunity to see each artist’s unique visual language as it traverses different materials and media. ‘Alternate Affect’ will be a stage for the diversity and variety of the artists’ work, which may at first glance appear defined and absolute.  The period when artist develops their own style and voice is a critical one, and the length of time varies from artist to artist. This show is an important new way of looking at the creation of art, opening up a path to grasp and monitor the endless possibilities and choices that artists face. The variety of these works and their different media provide insight into the process of creation in general, and into what it means to be an artist. Timothy Gasbarrro, Steel Ring, Tool steel, 2004, 1.75 x 1.75 x 0.50 inches.  Bennett’s fiber explorations have led him from drawings on canvas to painting, fashion, sculpture and back again. And at every turn he has produced an object that was both beautiful and compelling. Likewise, Gasbarro’s manipulation of found materials has developed into such a skillful subtlety that it often impossible to tell where the natural degradation of the original object ends and where the artist’s hand begins. He also makes it difficult but enticing to try divining the line that separates jewelry from modern sculpture.

The length of time it takes an artist to develop a strong artistic voice varies from person to person. This show will suggest a way of looking at the creation of art, opening up a path to grasp every object that an artist creates as a stone on a path of self-realization. These emerging artists are now finding their own languages through perseverance and a refusal to leave any possibility untested. Curated by May Shetrit, ‘Alternate Affect’ is an opportunity to discover what it means to follow the path of creation, often with an unknown destination, developing and evolving as it goes. The exhibition will allow the audience to explore a language that is unique to each artist, and to trace the transformations and subtleties as they grow and deal with the challenges each concept brings.
