Intersections is an exhibit series curated for the gallery 1313 Window
Box, centred around the concept of the “mash-up”; where two or more
voices/mediums/styles are combined to create a single work.  The focus
of these exhibitions is on the changeability of environment and
exploring the limits of creation. We extend the challenge to artists
to forget accepted “rules” and work in a fashion that includes an
understanding of flexibility in relation to the immediate environment.
This approach should bring about new and exciting projects that push
beyond the restraints of the traditional gallery milieu and the
confines of set artistic disciplines. Artists are welcome to submit work in any media, including but not
limited to: drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation,
participatory, performance, video, and new media.  Artists should
note, however, that sound elements are discouraged due to the
limitations of the box.

This series encourages artists to push the boundaries of their comfort
zones and take the opportunity to experiment with new mediums or
styles.
Keeping with the theme of the “mash-up” artists applying
collaboratively with significantly different practices will be given
special consideration. Artists applying independently may be matched
by the curators with other applicants to produce a collaborative work. For more information about the series, visit the Intersections
website: www.intersectionsg1313.worpress.com

Deadline for submissions is Friday July 16, 2010.

La Petite Mort Gallery presents…
FIVE DAY EXHIBIT
KARA WILLIAMS
New Paintings
July 16-22, 2010
Vernissage: Friday July 16, 2010 / 7-10pm

Tunes by Big Mac Daddy
Proudly Sponsored by CKCU 93.1 FM & Cheesy Luigi’s Pizzeria
“Continuing in our month long journey into the private and highly psychological inner world of self, we bring you Kara Williams. Tearing through heavily stifled inner secrets, Kara deconstructs the adult self in a playful manner. Her works boldly confront the viewer with subject matter that displaces societal propriety, fleshing out long lost fears and dark secrets. Come and share in this psychological cleansing and participate in this ritual of self exposure and release.”
-Christina Anastassopoulos, 2010

Artist Statement:
“This exhibit is made up of images containing private rites, twisted fairy tales, early sexuality, youthful fears and dreams, biographical and autobiographical narratives. I enjoy getting inside people’s heads, mine and those of people close to me. We all have a confused, wicked little child within us, but how often do we admit the true nature of this beast? Selfishly sexual, eternally curious and imaginative, these paintings show adults in their childhood guise. Secret ways that friends masturbated when they were children, distorted rumors and fears about what sex is, terror of the monsters and the dark, this is a fun and psychologically fraught exhibition.”
-Kara Williams, 2010

Teri Donovan: Half-Life

July 1 – Aug. 14, 2010
Opening reception: Friday July 9th   7:00 – 11:00 pm

The title of Teri Donovan’s exhibition, Half-life, generally refers to how long it takes for a substance to be reduced to half of its activity. Donovan uses this term as a metaphor for the long duration past influences have on any given subject. In her view, as the present becomes the past, it asserts an influence over the future via the mechanism of memory and projection.

Co-mingling wallpaper patterns and paint layers, Donovan sandwiches the past with the present to foreshadow a future embedded with bygone remnants. Old notions, styles, and behaviours, like old wallpaper, are replaced by the new, but are never really gone. In the guise of memory and desire they linger on in a spectral half-life projecting into the future where they emerge to be re-enacted, re-contextualized, and re-interpreted.

Donovan’s work addresses that tenacious desire for life that guarantees the past’s role in the present and the future, and simultaneously suggests how the present secures its own place as it moves towards its inevitable fate.

Teri Donovan is a Canadian artist based in Toronto. She graduated from York University and studied at the Ontario College of Art, the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, and the University of Toronto. She is represented by The Red Head Gallery in Toronto, and her work was featured in Carte Blanche Vol.2: Painting 2008a survey of contemporary painting in Canada.

The artist gratefully acknowledges the support of the Ontario Arts Council.

One Night Only Exhibit Lyle Richardson New Pastel & Watercolour on Paper Friday July 9, 2010 / 7-10 pm Tunes by Big Mac Daddy Sponsored by CKCU 93.1 FM”Lyle presents to us a world that is filled with wide eyed people in every day situations, be they street scenes, park scenes, or smutty scenes. His keen eye captures wonderment and emotion and with a quick gesture, he translates this for the viewer. His colouration is absolutely captivating, and his ability to show his world in such a matter of fact way is truly inspiring. Join us in this journey as we enter into Richardson’s world of back alleys, strip joints, and bedrooms.”  - Christina Anastassopoulos, 2010 Comment by his friend, Tony Fouhse: ” I’ve known Lyle since high school. We’d skip class, hang in the basement listening to Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf.   Lyle would play the blues on the piano and paint pictures.  He still plays the blues, and paints them, too.   His little water colors are stunning jewels, sometimes clear like diamonds, other times dark and deep as a blood red ruby.  He says he paints the weather, and I take that to mean the weather in his head.   Pure poetry…..the sunny days and the storms that sulk and rage inside each and every one”.    - Tony Fouhse, 2010 “A lot of the paintings take on a dream significance. The strip joints, etc., shouldn’t be taken too seriously. If I retain a spirit of fun when I paint perhaps it’s all worthwhile. Perhaps I just paint the weather.”  - Lyle Richardson, 2010 FACEBOOK INVITE: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=123272644381885&ref=ts Thank you,Christina Anastassopoulos Art Consiglieri La Petite Mort Gallery 306 Cumberland Street Ottawa, ON K1N 7H9 www.lapetitemortgallery.com

08. EXHIBITION | KOFFLER GALLERY OFF-SITE | Panya Clark Espinal:
Vagabond Vitrine
————————————————————————————————————
June 27 to August 1, 2010 | Curator: Mona Filip
Presented by the Koffler Gallery Off-Site at Mon Ton Window
Gallery, 402 College St Regular exhibition hours: On view 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week | Admission is FREE
To book group visits or tours, 416.638.1881 x4270

Through her mixed media installations, Toronto artist Panya
Clark Espinal questions notions of authenticity, appropriation,
reproduction, collection, and display, investigating the nature of
representation as practiced and engaged through the
institutions of culture-making. A masterful creator of experiences,
her evocative re-invigoration of already existent images brings
fresh perspectives and renewed intimacy to the act of looking. Before the closure of the old Koffler building, Clark Espinal
removed a section of the display case that had lined the lobby of
the Gallery. With Vagabond Vitrine, she transforms this uprooted
institutional vestige into a temporary sculpture that converges
with the fixed architecture of a former storefront on College
Street. Reflecting on the current nomadic circumstances of the
Gallery, the displaced Vitrine splices with the storefront window
and its re-imagined contents, in a nostalgic search to recover
purpose. Inside, fragmented traces of a natural history diorama
infuse the sculpture with the uncanny qualities of a lost Cabinet
of Curiosities. The work ultimately alludes to the history of cultural
representations of nature and to outdated modes of museum
presentation that still capture public affection with an aura of
fantasy and idealism.

Visible at any time, Vagabond Vitrine insinuates itself in the city
landscape and offers passers-by an extraordinary moment in the
midst of daily rush or in the mystery of the night, bringing art to
the everyday. While evoking the constant transformation of the
urban setting, the installation reflects on the unsettled
connection between culture and nature, and on the pervasive
power of the museum to equally educate and manipulate,
enchant and ensnare.

“REJECTS”

the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition July 8 - July 11, 2010
Propeller Centre for Visual Arts

In the spirit of the 1863 Salon des Refuses artists rejected from
the Toronto Outdoor Art exhibition create their own show. As Napoleon III said: “Let the people judgeâ€

The shear number of applicants every year to the massive
Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition at Nathan Phillips Square means
that some of the most dynamic and expressive artists are
necessarily rejected. Last year a group of these artists turned
their disappointment to opportunity and created the Rejects
show. Following on the overwhelming response and success of the
inaugural Rejects show, this year the Rejects will take over
Propeller Gallery in the Queen West core. Propeller is a long
standing artist run space which speaks to the heart of this show.

Twenty talented artists will be selling work that includes painting,
drawing, sculpture, photography and glass work. The Rejects
show is a must see event for anyone looking to see “the other
side† of the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. Exhibition Details

19. OPENING | Snowball Gallery | ABC: ANYTHING BUT CANVAS | JUL 8
————————————————————————————————————
[A Group Painting Exhibition]

Snowball Gallery and Workshop
1690 Queen Street West
July 8 to 25, 2010
Reception Thursday, July 8, 7PM-11PM The word canvas has its early roots in the Greek kannabis or
“made of hemp”, as the material was originally. Now, it is woven
generally of cotton or linen. Canvas has been long valued for its
durability yet flexibility, strong enough for a circus tent yet soft
enough for a sail. It came into use as a painting surface in
Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, marking a shift away
from the then common medium of wood panels. In the process,
paintings became portable and separate from their surroundings,
objects in and of themselves.

ABC: ANYTHING BUT CANVAS acknowledges the important role
of canvas in the development of painting, but questions what its
legacy is now and will be. Is it a unique, material offering or a
transcendent, metaphysical one? Or perhaps something else
entirely. Participating Artists:
Carlo Allarde
Tammi Campbell
Tony Yin Tak Chu
Shlomi Greenspan
Christofer Hutch
Henna Kim
Aaron Li-Hill
Dani Nash
Derek Power
Shawn Skeir

20. OPENING | Gallery 44 | Proof 17 | JUL 9
————————————————————————————————————
Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography
401 Richmond St West Suite 120 Toronto Ontario M5V 3A8 Proof 17
Christophe Jivraj
Aislinn Leggett
Meryl McMaster
Roger Proulx
Karen Zalamea

July 9 – August 7, 2010
Opening: Friday July 9, 6 to 9 pm with all artists in attendance PICTURING OURSELVES

Now in its 17th edition, Proof is Gallery 44’s annual exhibition
devoted to Canadian emerging photographers. From an open
call for submissions works are selected for Proof based on their
artistic merit and when placed together in exhibition a picture of
current photographic practices in Canada emerges.
In Proof 17, portraiture gives way to studies of the body and its
relationship to environments, history, work, and self-perception. Christophe Jivraj has been photographing a small group of
cognitively lucid and physically disabled people for the past 5
years. His images reflect on how they perceive their own bodies
and the way in which they interact with their surroundings.

Aislinn Leggett resurrects moments from the past by re-working
photos taken in the early part of the 20th century of her own and
other people’s ancestors. Her photographs in Lost Faces
contemplate the past, and relationships formed through land,
memory and family. Meryl McMaster also uses photography to connect with her
ancestry. By projecting portraits of late 19th century Native
American women onto her own body, she acts as a medium for
them to enter into the present, while laying claim to her own
heritage.

With his latest series of photos Roger Proulx moves into
alternate or perhaps future realities where people find
themselves trying to survive in a natural environment that has
become foreign to them. Karen Zalamea approaches portraiture from yet another
perspective by focusing on the body’s relationship to work. Her
performance-based photos represent work as a corporeal
experience of repeated gestures of effort and exertion,
referencing early 20th century motion studies and industrial

In his essay on Proof 17, titled Sharing and Digital Photography,
fellow emerging artist and writer Matthew Williamson says of the
artists in Proof 17, “They are building bodies of work that not only
reflect their knowledge of the history of photography, but of a
particular point in time when a hyper-abundance of imagery is
the norm.

Anthony‘s signature artistic style.

The Beauty of Failure

Show & Tell Gallery is proud to welcome Niall McClelland to his
first exhibition with the gallery. Sabbath Sold Soul is a body of work investigating the idea of
perpetuated adolescence. A re-imagined album design, a
fictional crew code of arms, a pot hedge, and smoke patterns
are explored through variety of simple, familiar mark making
methods, from graphite pencils, spray paint to marijuana leaf
stencils, and zippos. The resulting series display a sense of
formal elegance that lies in compelling contrast to the often raw,
crass, stoner symbols of youth culture explored in the work.

Call For Artists - Intersections Part 4

La Petite Mort Gallery presents: FIVE DAY EXHIBIT KARA WILLIAMS New Paintings July 16-22, 2010 Vernissage: Friday July 16, 2010 / 7-10pm

EXTREME PAINTING @ GALERIE D’ESTE
July 14 - August 15
Vernissage Wednesday July 14 from 5 pm to 8 pm

Galerie D’Este is proud to present the group show “Extreme Painting”, part of a series of exhibitions uniting sixteen Montreal galleries. The gallery will present works by Paul Bourgault, Ángel Mateo Charris, Costa Dvorezky, Drew Simpson and Jean-Pierre Ruel on the theme of the human figure. Each painter places the figure in context (or out of context) to elaborate on the body with his own vision.

Paul Bourgault uses vibrant colours and modeled flesh and draperies to create dynamic sacred spaces spilling over with abundance. The fragmented, Classicizing bodies swirl among food wrappings, labels, print cutouts and enlarged dot-matrix textures in dense compositions that are truly excessive.

In widescreen figuration, the work of Ángel Mateo Charris surprises with cinematic angles and simple but equivocal compositions. His costumed figures skulk anonymously at the centre of bizarre and irrational circumstances under a sky reminiscent of De Chirico, confronted inconclusively with symbols drawn from popular culture.

Costa Dvorezky’s « Jump » series explores the figure at the apex of a movement, floating against an abstract ground which drips down around them. Broad strokes define the play of light on muscles in a tribute to the Mannerist technique of distorting anatomy to enhance the sense of gesture. Through his amalgamation of genres, Dvorezky’s contemporary practice honors his heritage as a painter.

Drew Simpson’s arrangements of objects, resembling curiosity cabinets, reveal the interior spaces of homes in the hyper-naturalist tradition of classical Dutch still-life painting. The lush textures of wood paneling, velvet, flowers and fruit are set on edge by elements of strangeness referring to war and death, be it a human jawbone in a floral arrangements or a miniature Spitfire, guns blazing, arcing around an antique chair. This human element disturbs the space, troubling the viewer and offering an ironic comment on the relationship between the human being and his “interior”.
Jean-Pierre Ruel’s works provoke passion and reflection with his extraordinary brushwork and destabilizing content. The artist paints with an inspiration that is as much visceral as spiritual, his stroke at once instinctive and controlled. He presents silent, emotionally charged interactions between figures who seem to suddenly have fallen silent. The viewer is left to situate herself within these strange meetings, intrigued by the sensation of having just walked in on something.

Exhibition at Hamilton Artists Inc.

Hamilton Artists Inc

La Petite Mort Gallery presents….

“Sir Peter Blake was the natural choice when selecting an artist to reflect on the last 30 years of this incredible event – a great British artist for a great British event. We’re delighted to have collaborated with Opus on the project and are looking forward to seeing the new work set against the backdrop of the In The Long Run exhibition.”

Art exhibition “Abstract Experiences”
Thursday, July 8th
The Samsung Experience at the
Time Warner Center
3rd Floor
10 Columbus Circle
New York, NY 10019-1158

Matt Nahoum’s debut has been a long time coming. Born and raised in the Bronx, the Rabbit, as he is known, is the quintessential New York artist: inspired by everything around him, yet with a slightly twisted interpretation; his city roots lend him a context afforded only to “actual” New Yorkers.
The Rabbit is by no means new to art- indeed, he spent his entire youth, all the way through high school, painting and drawing- but after moving upstate to attend college, and then to San Diego to pursue a job opportunity, he “just stopped painting,” as he puts it. “There was a lack of inspiration, and I just couldn’t find my voice.”
Four years after moving back to his hometown, though, the Rabbit has found his voice and he is ready to speak. “When I left New York I was somewhat disillusioned with the city and it was kind of like we broke up,” he says. “But art heals and when I came back, the new burst of creativity I had almost felt like therapy, and that allowed me to come to terms with who I really am-both as a person and an artist.”
Held at the Time Warner Center’s Samsung Experience,  “Abstract Experiences” is both retrospective and reawakening. He has revisited old works and created new ones, tapping in to his newfound maturity as an artist. The exhibition will be held Thursday, July 8th from 6pm-8pm.

About the Rabbit
Eager to create the world through his eyes, Matt Rabbit has been expressing his most inner thoughts and expressions since he was a child. Matt Nahoum is textural abstract artist, living in Brooklyn New York. His work comes from chaotic places in his mind that come to life as he puts feeling to canvas. Art heals, and Matt uses creativity as therapy. It keeps him here. Keeps him from running. Run rabbit, run.

About the show
“Abstract Experiences” marks the debut of emerging abstract artist Matt Nahoum, and brings to life his unique vision and expression. The show will feature some of his most visionary works as well as some of Samsung’s cutting edge visual display technology.

“REJECTS”

2nd Salon des Refuses from
the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition July 8 - July 11, 2010

Dani Nash

Her
performance-based photos represent work as a corporeal
experience of repeated gestures of effort and exertion,
referencing early 20th century motion studies and industrial
management.

In his essay on Proof 17, titled Sharing and Digital Photography,
fellow emerging artist and writer Matthew Williamson says of the
artists in Proof 17, “They are building bodies of work that not only
reflect their knowledge of the history of photography, but of a
particular point in time when a hyper-abundance of imagery is
the norm.

Anthony Lister - The Beauty of Failure

Show & Tell Gallery is pleased to welcome Anthony Lister to his
first solo exhibit with the gallery as well as his first exhibition in
Canada. The Beauty of Failure is a unique look at the reward and
punishment systems, and more specifically when the two
overlap. The paintings and sculptures in this show demonstrate a
tounge in cheek look at contemporary pop culture through
Anthony‘s signature artistic style.

The Beauty of Failure
July 9th - August 8th 2010 Niall McClelland - Sabbath Sold Soul
