Art Show & Sale - SOUL THRU NATURE, by Jana Cerna-Bachtik & Mika Holubec

Unknownname
Origo Books Gallery is proud to showcase a selection of works by local visual artists JANA BACHTIK and MIKA HOLUBEC — Friday March 2, 5pm. Downtown Toronto.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 8, 2012 —

Origo Books Gallery is proud to showcase a selection of works by local visual artists JANA CERNA-BACHTIK and MIKA HOLUBEC.

As a reflection of her own cognitive process, JANA’s paintings strives to express and channel the feelings, thoughts, and experiences incoming from the external world. Her work recognizes the body as the script of each individual’s personal story, convinced as she is that the figurative must become secondary to the inner state of being poured on the canvas and should be constructed from within, from those thoughts and feelings that shape our lives and determine our fates.

Photography provides MIKA with a deep spiritual connection with the subject, nature, and the world at large. Her urge to capture a moment and the emotion that streams out from it like an inner voice finds resonance in her hope that people absorb, experience, and feel enriched by the beauty of the instants she has felt blessed to have experienced.

JANA CERNA-BACHTIK is a Toronto-based visual artist with a steady track of solo and joint exhibits in the last decade. She studied Art Collage in her natal Czech Republic and classical painting at her arrival in Canada. Her work has been shown at the Hittite Gallery, Laurier Gallery, Zypr Gallery, Michelangelo Gallery and Praxis Gallery (Toronto), as well as the World Fine Gallery (New York), among others.

MIKA HOLUBEC has been taking photographs since her teen years while she was living in the Czech Republic. After her arrival in Canada, she studied Art and Photography at York University, Toronto. Her photos has been featured in several collective shows around the GTA.

SOUL THRU NATURE art show & sale will continue until Saturday March 31, 2012. Located at the store’s mezzanine, the Origo Books Gallery is open Monday to Friday, Noon to 6pm.

Opening date: Friday March 2, 2012 at 5:00pm.

Unfamiliar Territories at Lonsdale Gallery February 8- March 25, reception February 18 from 2-4pm

LONSDALE GALLERY Unfamiliar Territories
February 9 - March 25, 2011
reception: Saturday, February 18 from 2-4pm

featuring: Sally Ayre, Jim Hake, Osheen Harruthoonyan, Joan Kaufman
ut

Unfamiliar Territories brings together the work of artists: Sally Ayre, Jim Hake, Osheen Harruthoonyan and Joan Kaufman. Each of these artists employ ambiguous narratives in their work. Though varied in their techniques, a sense of the magical, the oblique and the bizarre presides in the work of each of these artists.

Sally Ayre is a photo-based artist employing techniques such as Van Dyke, cyanotype, photo silk-screen and photo lithography in her work. At the core of her art practice are notions of loss, longing, and the history of her Newfoundland roots. Now based in Toronto, the artist frequently returns to Newfoundland, in search of objects and information, which become the basis for the work. Organic objects such as rocks, seaweed, shells, and feathers, are the building blocks for her constructed narratives, abstractions that have their roots in the artist’s childhood and reminiscence. Jim Hake tells stories through sculpture. Although his work is dominated by clay and porcelain, he works with a variety of materials including wood, metal, plaster and glass. His work often depicts icons of the human condition with themes such as community, parenthood, and loss. Hake’s deeply personal works touch on issues that effects us all, allowing for an individual connection for each viewer. Jim Hake received his BFA in sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art, an MA in Sculpture at the California State University, Sacramento and an MFA in sculpture at Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts, Indiana University, Bloomington. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe, in particular Milan, Bologna, Venice, Lugano, Stockholm and London.

Osheen Harruthoonyan is a photographer and experimental filmmaker based in Toronto. He employs a multi-faceted approach towards his practice, investigating themes such as memory, history, and the deconstructive process of time. The idea of the fragmentation of memory over time is emphasized by his use of analogue printing processes in a traditional black & white darkroom. Harruthoonyan layers and manipulates both found and personal photographs to create provocative hand-made images that straddle the line between dream and nightmare. Osheen’s work has been widely exhibited, including two Featured Exhibitions with the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival (2010 and 2011). Joan Kaufman is a multi-disciplinary artist exploring the mediums of sculpture, photography, video and sound composition to produce highly symbolic multi-dimensional works of art. She works in series producing multi-media installations that blur the boundaries between illusion and reality by creating both photographic and filmic constructs. Her work thus generates moments, which are continuously suspended in a larger unfolding narrative that spans the artist’s entire oeuvre. Kaufman has exhibited both nationally and internationally; is the recipient of Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council and Manitoba Arts Council grants; and has works in both public and private collections.

Pari Nadimi Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new works by Michael Dudeck.

MESSIAH is Michael Dudeck’s second solo exhibition at Pari Nadimi Gallery, and centers around a fictive prophet in an elaborate queer mythology Dudeck has spent the last 3 years developing. Focusing on the moment of Death of the Prophet, Dudeck explores the loss of subjectivity involved in being iconic. The Messianic figure must accept the projections of it’s public and correspond to, or retaliate against the invention that accompanies his/her own existence. MESSIAH explores the propaganda, the consecration and ceremonial aftermath of the life of the messianic figure through the lens of a queer science-fiction/fantasy blurring prehistory and futurity in a hybrid museological installation.

The exhibition includes large-scale photographic prints on ragpaper, which Dudeck has carved into, maimed, and painted over, a stylized video of the prophets death ceremony, excerpts from an invented sacred text displayed on the walls of the gallery as didactic information, as well as the mummified prophet encased in a plexiglass tomb.

MESSIAH is the sixth installment of Michael Dudeck’s RELIGION project following Parthenogenesis (Pari Nadimi Gallery, Toronto, 2009), Cathexis (PLATFORM Center for Photographic and Digital Arts, Winnipeg, 2010), WombTomb (Center for Performance Research, New York, 2011), Amygdala (ace art inc., Winnipeg, 2011), and Pharmakos (The Glasshouse, Tel Aviv, 2012). In addition to these projects, Dudeck has delivered performances, group and solo exhibitions and launched publications nationally and internationally including John Connelly Presents (NYC), The Watermill Center (New York), Art Metropole (Toronto), and Gallery Connexion (Fredericton, New Brunswick). His work has been featured in the New York Times, the Village Voice, View on Canadian Art, Fuse Magazine, and he was one of 500 young artists featured in the New Museum’s Younger than Jesus Artist Directory by Phaidon Press.  In fall of 2012, Dudeck is one of 12 artists selected to participate in The Winnipeg Art Gallery’s banner exhibition Winnipeg Now, which will feature the seventh installment of Dudeck’s Religion project : The Baculum Cosmogony, curated by Robert Enright and Meeka Walsh.

For more information about Michael Dudeck or the gallery, please visit our website  www.parinadimigallery.com or contact the gallery at info@parrinadimigallery.com, 254 Niagara St., Toronto, Canada or 416-591-6464.

Robert Boyd on Robert Pruitt | Shepard Fairey Speaks | Welcome “Wax by the Fire”!

Monday February 6, 2012

Comment of the Week

…one of the great threats to any art network — call it a scene, a world, whatever — is the threat of suburbanization. By that I mean: making the rough “smooth”, the unpalatable “chic”, the homeless “homey”. - Michael Corris on Dallas’ institutional brotherhood weighs in on Dallas’ art scene at DMA State of the Arts

Mystery Dinner with CADD

Article image

Lucia Simek attends the Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas mystery dinner - and likes it.

When people started dancing, and I looked back at Barry Whistler – one of Dallas’ most respected gallerists of twenty-five years – drumming away on the stage, I wondered where I was for a moment. It was like an odd dream of Dallas where suddenly all of the pretenses about money and status and culture and success were banished. What was left was something far more essential — delight.

Professionalizing Artists at UT

Claire Ruud discusses UT’s new MFA course Professional Practices: Staying in the Game.

To me, it sounds a little bit like a splash of cold water in the face. How will you develop and maintain a flourishing network of curators, gallerists, artists? How will you find time to read Art Power and Empire after work? How will you sustain a practice when no one’s watching you, when you have a day job, when your studio is a closet?

Laura Kikauka Strength Thru Embarrassment opening Saturday February 11 2-5 PM at MKG127

MKG127 is pleased to present Strength Thru Embarrassment, the second solo exhibition at MKG127 by Meaford, Ontario based artist, Laura Kikauka.

Opening Saturday February 11  2-5 PM.
in Strength Thru Embarrassment, Laura Kikauka presents new work that combines the aesthetics of both intention and accident. In an act of double-appropriation, she alters a large collection of  ”art” purchases (largely from thrift stores) by collaging, drawing and painting excerpts from song lyrics into the found “art”. The appropriation of found paintings and song lyrics makes the original artist and lyricist unwitting collaborators with Kikauka, thus creating a three-way collaborative process. The resulting visual works pose a game for the viewer, who may often recognize the song lyrics but might be puzzled to name the song from which the lyrics were borrowed. Kikauka appropriates lyrics from all genres of popular & unpopular song: classic rock, pop, new wave, punk, indie, country, metal, jazz and easy listening and from such musical suspects as Abba & Aerosmith to Zappa & ZZ Top and the many musicians in between.
Laura Kikauka’s body of work over the past twenty-five years encompasses various mediums including site specific installation, mixed media, electronic sculpture, drawing, photography, video, performance, music, text and costume creations. Kikauka’s  installations establish a highly specific visual (and often audio) language that blends the increasingly overlapping worlds of high and low art forms. In general Laura’s ‘excessive aesthetic’ is comparable to urban archeology and addresses issues of consumer culture, and the question of good and bad taste. It also celebrates failure in a humourous and ironic manner. Kikauka’s work is inspired and derived from decades of on-going collecting of found objects. Employing the formal strategy of meticulously sorting and organizing these objects, as well as modifying or transforming them, she then creates specifically themed and coded installations that transform gallery and exhibition spaces into densely packed, highly detailed installations. Laura’s categorization speaks of similarities and differences. The Funny Farm studio in rural Meaford is a combination of living and working spaces treated as on-going installations that exemplify, through a density of detail her interest in low class consumer culture. It is with a sense of sarcasm and empathy that she explores this reoccurring theme.

The exhibition continues until March 10.

Andy Brayman from The Matter Factory presenting this Tuesday, February 7 at OCADU

Pragmatism and Decadence through Applied Research

Artworks by Andy Brayman and the Matter Factory

Tuesday, February 7, 2012, OCAD University, 6:30 pm

Hello World - click to see video

Join us this Tuesday, February 7th to welcome Andy Brayman

OCAD University, 100 McCaul Street, Toronto.
Room 230 (second floor)
6:30 - 7:30 pm

Free to attend!

Brayman will describe his working process and discuss the resulting objects, which are born through a unique mixture of science and art. Specifically, his research into robotic fabrication and porcelain production will be presented.

“My current work comes from research into new technologies coupled with my long-standing interest in utility. While the forms are largely defined by conventions of function, the specifics of these forms and their surfaces are born from digital tools: software and hardware.”

Andy Brayman holds a BA in sociology and a BFA in ceramics from the University of Kansas (1996) and an MFA in ceramics from Alfred University (1998). His work is a combination of traditional craft, industrial processes, and contemporary art strategies. At their best, his pots demonstrate an object’s potential to be both beautiful and cerebral. In 2005, Andy founded The Matter Factory in Kansas City. It is part artist studio, part laboratory, and part factory. In addition to producing objects of his design, the company contains a collaborative element. Guest designers and artists are invited to develop objects for production, which might otherwise have trouble finding an eager manufacturer.
